Opportunity
A way forward for coral conservation
With reports and documentaries showing coral reef devastation from global warming, people believed coral was a lost cause. OneReef had to prove otherwise.
Obstacle
A story to rally U.S. support for indigenous communities
OneReef’s community-led management model restored Helen Reef from 90% morbidity in less than ten years. However, outside of Palau, few philanthropists could understand how. OneReef needed a narrative to create a new category of conservation that made indigenous communities the key to supporting 80% of the worlds ocean biodiversity.
Solution
Inspiring stories of Ocean Stewardship
Using the heroic story of how OneReef helped island community leaders restore and evolve a cultural tradition of sustainable marine practices, Ocean Stewardship, donors were called to help serve the underserved, whose way of life demonstrated the way forward for a sustainable blue planet.
Results
Purpose. Clarity. Larger donations from foundations.
A few chosen words can change the world. In this case, serving our Ocean Stewards focused OneReef’s core mission and became the call for new, corporate donors, like Jeff Bezos, to make large donations, significantly greater that OneReef had received before.
